Pharmacy First: Impetigo

What Is Impetigo?

Impetigo is a common, highly contagious skin infection that causes red sores or blisters, often around the nose and mouth. It's especially common in children and can spread quickly. Under the free NHS Pharmacy First service, our pharmacist can assess and treat it without a GP appointment.

Am I Eligible?

This pathway is available for patients aged 1 and over with localised, non-bullous impetigo. Our pharmacist will check symptoms against the NHS clinical criteria at the start of the consultation.

What Happens at the Consultation?

Our pharmacist will examine the affected skin, ask about how long it's been present and whether it's spreading, and check for anything that needs referring to a GP. Most consultations take around 15 minutes and can be done on a walk-in basis or by appointment.

What Treatment Might Be Offered?

Where clinically appropriate, our pharmacist can issue a topical or oral antibiotic directly under the Pharmacy First patient group direction, along with advice on hygiene to prevent it spreading to others.

When Should I See a GP Instead?

If the infection is widespread, affecting a baby under 1, or not improving with treatment, our pharmacist will refer you on to your GP or another appropriate service.

You don't need to be registered with our pharmacy, but you do need to be registered with a GP practice in England to access the service.
