What Is an Infected Insect Bite?

Insect bites can become infected, causing increasing redness, swelling, warmth or pus around the bite. Left untreated, an infection can worsen quickly. Under the free NHS Pharmacy First service, our pharmacist can assess and treat it without a GP appointment.

Am I Eligible?

This pathway is available for patients aged 1 and over. Our pharmacist will check the bite and your symptoms against the NHS clinical criteria at the start of the consultation.

What Happens at the Consultation?

Our pharmacist will examine the bite, ask how it's changed since it happened, and check for anything needing referral to a GP. Most consultations take around 15 minutes and can be done on a walk-in basis or by appointment.

What Treatment Might Be Offered?

Where clinically appropriate, our pharmacist can issue an antibiotic directly under the Pharmacy First patient group direction, along with advice on preventing further infection and reducing swelling.

When Should I See a GP Instead?

If the infection is spreading rapidly, you feel unwell or feverish, or symptoms don't improve with treatment, our pharmacist will refer you on to your GP or another appropriate service.
