Pharmacy First: Shingles

What Is Shingles?

Shingles is a painful rash caused by reactivation of the chickenpox virus, and early treatment matters in reducing the severity and duration of symptoms. Under the free NHS Pharmacy First service, our pharmacist can assess and treat it without a GP appointment.

Am I Eligible?

This pathway is available for patients aged 18 and over, ideally seen within 72 hours of the rash appearing. Our pharmacist will check your symptoms against the NHS clinical criteria at the start of the consultation.

What Happens at the Consultation?

Our pharmacist will examine the rash, ask when it started, and check for anything needing referral to a GP — for example, a rash near the eye. Most consultations take around 15 minutes and can be done on a walk-in basis or by appointment.

What Treatment Might Be Offered?

Where clinically appropriate, our pharmacist can issue antiviral treatment directly under the Pharmacy First patient group direction, along with advice on pain relief and reducing the risk of spreading it to others who haven't had chickenpox.

When Should I See a GP Instead?

If the rash is near an eye, you're pregnant or immunosuppressed, or symptoms are severe, our pharmacist will refer you on to your GP or another appropriate service urgently.

Yes, Pharmacy First is a free NHS service. Usual prescription charges may apply to any medicine issued.

Why does early treatment matter?

Antiviral treatment works best when started early, so it's worth being seen as soon as possible after the rash appears.

Do I need to be registered with a GP?

You don't need to be registered with our pharmacy, but you do need to be registered with a GP practice in England to access the service.
