What Is an Uncomplicated UTI?

A urinary tract infection causes symptoms such as a burning sensation when passing urine, needing to go more often, or lower tummy pain. Under the free NHS Pharmacy First service, our pharmacist can assess and treat uncomplicated UTIs in women without a GP appointment.

Am I Eligible?

This pathway is available for women aged 16 to 64 with typical UTI symptoms and no complicating factors (such as pregnancy, recurrent UTIs, or a catheter). Our pharmacist will check your symptoms against the NHS clinical criteria at the start of the consultation.

What Happens at the Consultation?

Our pharmacist will ask about your symptoms and carry out a urine dipstick test if needed, then check for anything that needs referring to a GP. Most consultations take around 15 minutes and can be done on a walk-in basis or by appointment.

What Treatment Might Be Offered?

Where clinically appropriate, our pharmacist can issue a short course of antibiotics directly under the Pharmacy First patient group direction, along with advice on fluids and pain relief.

When Should I See a GP Instead?

If you're pregnant, have recurrent UTIs, symptoms of a kidney infection (such as back pain or fever), or symptoms that don't improve, our pharmacist will refer you on to your GP or another appropriate service.

Yes, Pharmacy First is a free NHS service. Usual prescription charges may apply to any medicine issued.

Why is this only for women aged 16–64?

UTIs in men, children, pregnant women, or women outside this age range can be more complex and are outside the scope of this NHS pathway — our pharmacist will advise on the right next step if that applies to you.

Do I need to be registered with a GP?

You don't need to be registered with our pharmacy, but you do need to be registered with a GP practice in England to access the service.
