Pneumococcal disease is caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria, which can lead to serious infections including pneumonia, sepsis (blood poisoning) and meningitis. The pneumococcal vaccine protects against the most common strains of the bacteria, and Essex Pharmacy offers this vaccine free of charge on the NHS for eligible patients.

Who Should Get Vaccinated?

• •Babies, as part of the routine childhood immunisation programme
• •Adults aged 65 and over
• •Anyone with a long-term health condition such as chronic heart, lung, liver or kidney disease, or diabetes
• •People with a weakened immune system, cochlear implants, or sickle cell disease
