Tick-Borne Encephalitis (TBE) is a viral infection of the brain transmitted primarily through the bite of infected ticks, found across a wide belt of forested areas from Central Europe through Russia to Japan. Planning to hike or camp in an endemic area? Vaccination is recommended for outdoor activity between April and November.

The vaccine is generally well tolerated. Common side effects include localised soreness, redness or swelling at the injection site, headache, muscle aches and mild fatigue. Tick repellents and protective clothing are important complements to vaccination, but do not replace it.
